Dear Chris:
It is so sad to hear that you have left this earth way too soon my friend.
I still remember the first day I met you. I was five years old, holding my mother’s hand in the parking lot of St. Jerome’s waiting for the first day of first grade. I saw you in the distance and asked my mom: “Who is that kid with the red hair?” I mean, I never saw anything like that before, such flaming red hair. My mom, although never having met you either, knew who you were. You were part of the sprawling Gribbon clan. Everyone at St. Jerome’s knew your family well (they also knew your family also had a lock when it came to altar serving, selling The Tablet outside of church on Sunday, or other ad-hoc parish jobs... but with so many kids, who could blame them?).
We got to know each other quite well through 8 years of grammar school together especially during the long walks home from school every day. However, it was not until after 8th grade graduation that we really started hanging out and became best friends. We spent the summers in front of the garage on 25th street… usually with a rotating mix of various brothers, sisters, and other assorted, colorful characters such as "Fat Frankie", Uggie, and some Italian kid who seemingly always wore a black leather jacket, even in summer.
And of course, our adventures did not just remain on 25th street or the surrounding blocks. We had many good times taking the train into the city to go to concerts and went to the Pink Floyd laser light show at the Hayden Planetarium more times then we could count. But most of our time was just spent hanging out. Talking about family, friends, life… all those things teenagers were trying to figure out together. Your steady, unwavering friendship helped me deal with some challenging times. To say "it was good to have you as a friend" would be an understatement.
Sadly, we started losing touch during our 20s. However, I will never forget how the friendship with you, and your family in general, helped define my teenage years. Sure, we’d push the limits some, but we always stayed well-grounded in the end. And when you started doing odd jobs at the catering hall and the pizzeria, I really came to admire your work ethic and independence. You, like so many in your family, were never afraid to put in a hard day's work. It was something I admired and looked up to. I've told many a people about the work ethic that was part of you and your family
Rest well my friend. And even though we haven’t seen each other in a while, you will still be missed. We'll catch each other on the other side.
