I met Joe in 1990 when he was a senior forensic chemist with DEA and we were able to convince him to be a supervisor. Being a Texan, Joe educated me on how to survive in New York. Joe was a very knowledgeable forensic chemist and someone I considered a friend. RIP Joe!

Joe and I grew up together on 32nd street he was like the brother I never had , we would go fishing for snappers at the creek,Joe was always the quite one of the group myself, Charles , Glen and Ira, We were both drafted around the same time myself in 1965 I think they got Joe in 66, while I was in high school I built a boat in wood shop, it was about 8 feet long,we christened it the Ch LO JA (charles louie, loe)When we took it to the creek for it's maiden voyage none of us were brave enough to get in and set sail, so we decided to abandon ship and sunk it, I think we set fire to it also if I remember correctly. A few years ago my wife and I booked and 11 day cruise that departed San Juan Puerto Rico and decided to ask Joe and Kathy to go with us, It had been over 40 years since we had seen each other , I think I can truthfully say of all the cruises Sheila and I had been on that was the most memorable , We went to all 10 of the Saint Islands in 11 days and returned to Galveston Tx . For Joes 70th surprise birthday Kathy invited us to come to Brooklyn and surprise him, he was shocked to see us there, after we spent a week at there home it was like all those years apart disappeared , I could go on forever, Joe suffered with Parkinson's for many years, his mind was always sharp but his body was frail, God be with you Joe you will be missed

My dad had a way of making people laugh with bad humor. Whether it was an ill timed fart joke or scream-singing the opening words to Space Oddity by David Bowie, he never failed to put a smile on my face. Though through the years he may have become a little wearier and more timid, his humor lived in the memories of all the people he had the pleasure to encounter. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and a friend. And though his passing has broken our hearts, keep in your memory the laughs and the joy that he brought us. Now he is at peace. I know he is up there fishing And singing with his preceded family and friends. Thank you to all that have reached out and given your condolences. We, the Barbato Family, greatly appreciate it.

I’m glad I had the pleasure of getting to know you a little better, these past couple of years, at some luncheons with you and Kathy. You came across to me as an intelligent and gentle man! Rest In Peace, Joe!
