I was so sorry to hear of the passing of John Cortese
My mother would bring me John's store and bought all her fruits and vegetables at his store.
John always knew which fruits were ripe and in season and would help us select the best fruits and vegetables.
John was such a lovely man. I am glad he had long and happy life. Still I am sad that his family will miss him.

My deepest condolences to The Cortese Family. John was a very special gentleman in my life. He was a patient in my office for many years. When I would shop in his wonderful store, he would greet me with a smile & sing to me. Many times we would dance to his nostalgic music & he would share stories with me of memories past. He became a wonderful friend & I looked forward to seeing him when I was on the Avenue. He was a true gentleman & an icon in our neighborhood. He was truly loved by all. He will be greatly missed. I’m sure he is singing & dancing in heaven with all the angels & saints.

To The Cortese Family, our deepest sympathy, love and prayers.Your Dad was a great man. Along with your Mom they possessed the qualities and the way they lived their lives, that had such a positive impact on so many people growing up in this part of Brooklyn.Hardworking, humble, faithful, caring, patriotic and unselfish. They were the salt of the earth. Truly, they were the greatest generation! We were blessed and better off to have known them. What a life well lived. We can all take a lesson on how Mr. Cortese lived his life.We will be thinking of and praying for all of you during these coming days. God Bless you all, God Bless you Mr. Cortese.Rest in Peace.

I am incredibly heartbroken by the loss of my dear neighbor and friend, Mr. John Cortese..
My beloved John was the salt of the earth; when I visited the fruit market twice a week; he serenaded me with traditional musical standards; told wartime stories and always made sure my delicious fruits salads were full to the rim with my favorite pineapples.
He was exceptionally professional, consistently gracious and demonstrated enthusiasm and tremendous pride for his family owned business.
Moreover, he treated everyone with genuine kindness and was a beloved member of our community.
On June 23rd, 2019, I had the pleasure and privilege of celebrating two momentous occasions, with John’s family, friends and loyal customers, the 80th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Market and John’s 95th Birthday Celebration!
My profound and heartfelt condolences are extended to John’s family, friends and loved ones!!
John will be deeply missed and always remembered with great fondness!!
I will always love you, my friend!! Rest in Eternal Peace, my Precious and Beloved John!!!

I would like to send my deepest condolances to the family of John Cortese or paps as I have known to call him from his loving and dedicated daughter Louise. From her many conversations about her dad and even speaking to him on the phone I had grown to love him as my dad as well. He was indeed a loving and caring man and a light in the community. He was a true icon and will be sorely missed by those who knew him, but especially his loving family. May he rest in peace.

Your dad will be greatly missed. He was a fixture of our neighborhood, those painted green doors, the photos, the stories and his kindness is just something that will always be there in our hearts even though he is gone now. I hope you take comfort in knowing how much he was loved by all that met him. Rest In Peace.

What measures the greatness of one man's life? Is it his love of family? His contributions and heroics to his country? His dedication as a great father? With my Uncle John it was all of these things! And more...Uncle John had the very rare gift of leaving a mark on every single person who crossed his path in his 95 plus years! It was truly an innate gift for him to touch everyone's life...and give you his undivided attention as though you were very important...His passing has broken my heart in words I can never express!..I celebrate that he was here on this earth, and I happen to be a rider on his journey on this earth. However I deeply grieve that he no longer under this sky with me anymore....
Until we meet again......I love you Uncle John..
