Arthur J. Halbran Sr. died peacefully at home on January 4,2025 on the same block he was born on November 1,1927 in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn to his parents Alice Wamsley and Arthur C. Halbran. He was raised by his grandparents and attended PS 130 and Manual Training High School where he excelled in academics and was an outstanding athlete. He was offered a contract with the Washington Senators farm team out of H.S. His biggest dream was to be a Sea Bees in the Navy, but he was honorably discharged due to a surgical mishap to his face prior to his enlistment. He considered this one of his biggest disappointments.
He later met the love of his life Claire (Hynes) and was married for 30 years. Arthur is predeceased by two of his children, Diane and Arthur. After his loss of Claire due to illness he married Rita (Fox) also widowed and they were married 20 years until her death in 2011. Arthur is predeceased by two of his children, Diane and Arthur. He is survived by his loving daughter Susan (Kevin), adored grandchildren Kevin (Mariya), Megan (Robert) and Kelly (Matthew) and beloved five great grandchildren Nora, Elizabeth, Terence, Thomas and Liam.
He swore he wasn't a cat person yet Mushy and Iggy were treated like his babies. He loved every one of his nieces and nephews and Rod, his caretaker, who became more like family to him.
He had a career with the phone company that spanned 40 years where he rose from a repairman to a district manager. He was responsible for many changes and innovations to keep up with the changes in the telecommunication industry.
Artie was known for his wit and practical jokes throughout his life. He loved playing golf and was very proud of his hole in one. He enjoyed traveling and giving out his "Artie Halbran is a Great Guy" business cards. He especially loved Atlantic City. Anyone who knew him was aware that he would be at the same Keno machine for hours on end and somehow seemed to always manage to win a jackpot. He loved watching the Mets and Fox News and read the New York Post religiously every day.
He was a friend to everyone and known as a Windsor Terrace icon. Artie loved writing and always had an iPad by his side.
The week before he died he completed his book "About Face" which will be submitted for printing shortly. It is filled with stories of his life and the neighborhood, and he was anxious to share it with everyone.
