Obituary of Thomas F. Concannon
Thomas F. Concannon passed away at the age of 88 on January 3, 2025 in Breezy Point, New York. He did so in the comfort of his Catholic faith and in the love of his family and friends. Thomas was born on September 12, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, the youngest son of Kathleen Higgins Concannon of County Galway, Ireland and John Concannon of County Mayo, Ireland.
He grew up in Park Slope with sisters Mary and Kitty, and older brother Jack. He would fondly recall that any potential bullies in the neighborhood knew that if they wanted to mess with Tommy, they’d have to deal with Jack. He had a happy childhood attending St. Saviour grammar school and St. Augustine’s High School, working, playing stickball and stoopball, and proudly recalling that despite his childhood bout of polio, he was the fastest runner in his eighth grade class. Tom eventually moved on to Manhattan College, where he received his B.S. in civil engineering. Out of college Tom got a job with Otis Elevators, but continued his education at night, getting his J.D. from Fordham Law. Tom clerked for Judge Francis Dooling in the Federal Court for the Eastern District of New York. Tom met the love of his life, Anne Byrnes, also of Brooklyn, and they married in 1964. By 1970 they had settled on E 16th Street in the Flatbush enclave of Ditmas Park, where they raised their three children, Thomas, Kathleen, and David, and were active members of Holy Innocents Parish. Tom and Anne helped run the parish teen club, chaperoning dances and other gatherings. In the 70s they were active members of Marriage Encounter, traveling around the country and as far away as Australia, leading weekends and mentoring other couples and families with faith, energy and enthusiasm.
Summers were mostly spent at the Breezy Point Surf Club and at Riis Park, with the occasional family vacation up to Maine or Connecticut. Tom’s career ultimately segued to Wall Street. He worked for the American Stock Exchange, AG Becker, Bear Stearns, and in the 80s with a partner opened his own company, Vincent, Thomas and Associates. Tom was a mentor to many friends and family members as they embarked upon finance careers on “the Street of Dreams.” Eventually Tom and Anne bought a bungalow in Breezy Point, and then after thirty years on E 16th Street, they moved to Breezy permanently in 2002. Along the way Tom gathered and kept lifelong friends. Tom had Park Slope and Flatbush friends, he attended reunions at St. Augustine’s, and he regularly saw buddies from Manhattan College and from Fordham Law.
Tom and Anne loved to host large parties which were lively affairs full of music, singing, and of course, Tom’s storytelling and classic jokes. After losing Anne in 2007, Tom continued to live a full and social life in Breezy Point, surrounded by supportive neighbors. He began swimming three times a week with his good friend Peter Purpura, joined and then became president of the Century Club, sang with the Blessed Trinity choir, travelled with the Civil War club, and read with the Good Shepherd book club. He found love again with Anne O’Sullivan, whom he sadly lost in 2016.
Tom founded the Breezy Point teen-senior computer mentoring program, he facilitated career mentoring of American veterans, he served on the team that researched and campaigned for a Breezy Point sewer system, and still found time to drive back and forth to New Jersey to help in the caretaking and raising of his six grandchildren.
Tom leaves behind his beloved children, Thomas (Cindy) and Kathleen (Kevin Cuddihy), his adored grandchildren, Sean, Molly and Liam Concannon, and Kevin, Grace and Jack Cuddihy. Tom was predeceased by his wife, Anne Byrnes Concannon, and by his beloved son David. He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary Concannon, Catherine Concannon, SSND, and Jack Concannon. Predeceased by brothers-in-law Kenneth and Robert Byrnes, and sisters-in-law Kathleen Concannon and Johanna Byrnes, he is survived by sisters-in-law Helen Lynch Byrnes and Joanne Hickey Byrnes. He leaves behind many fond nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
