One of the finest men I’ve ever known. A friend in the truest sense of the word. Such a funny guy but I always had to pay close attention to his humor, he would speak in traditional Brooklyn and I have Texas hearing. He gave me a special gift of an engraved knife while we were deployed to Afghanistan. I shall cherish it always. It was my honor to have served with him.

Steve was literally the type of man you would want to be in a foxhole with. A man's man. A patriot, mentor, brother and inspiration to many. You will be missed my brother. Thank you for being a true friend.

Steve was my first boss at Mercedes . I was 16 when I started and he preached attention to detail and was the definition of a professional. He taught me valuable lessons that have stood with me until now at 36. I always remembered him and will remember him for his positive influence on me as a man and now a father and professional. My heart goes out to his family . May he rest in peace but never be forgotten .

Senior Bylis will always be in my core memory as one of the very best leaders a junior sailor like myself could ever encounter. He truly believed in uplifting his junior troops. There is simply none like him. A true leader, mentor, father figure, and friend! Rest easy shipmate. We have the watch.
