I am so sorry to hear this sad news about Tommy. My condolences to the Gavitt family. I was truly blessed to know Tommy. He was a quiet Giant of a man who demanded respect and gave it. He didn't say much , but when he did you listened. I will always remember the times in the huddle and on the field. I will miss him dearly. A true Hero .Tommy and his family will always be in my prayers.

The last time I met Tom was in the 1970’s. We played for the Titans. He had the heart of a lion, and the strength of an ox. He was a gentleman and a kindhearted soul. Please accept my condolences on your loss Katy.

For the Gavitt Family:
That calling post message from the firehouse with the news about Tom just left me stunned. We've gotten too many of them lately and now it creates major apprehension. I've had been in L147 for a long time and I've seen some very brave men perform acts of valor under severe conditions along with those who were amazingly skillful in all facets of firefighting. Tommy was right up at the top of the list. Additionally he was brutally powerful. If you were trapped you'd hope that he was the man coming for you. Strong but gentle just like Clint Walker (tv's Cheyenne). From firehouse renovations to helping company members with home projects, Tommy was all in no matter how hard or how far away it was. We all owed him plenty! In 2002 at the annual company dinner several of us old timers were honored (more like a Dean Martin roast) for retirement. Each was given accolades, gifts and asked to speak. After the usual sarcasms, summaries, gratitudes, etc. I noticed Tommy nearby wearing a blue suit. Don't know why I blurted out: "I'll bet my pension that there's a red cape under his suit." Later on he told me: "No cape." I didn't believe him. That damned WTC the year before proved to be his Kryptonite. Down the road it was heartbreaking to learn of what the Job cost him. Eventually the ultimate sacrifice. It stinks and it hurts all of us who loved him but after all he was a great Fireman and should be an inspiration to those who follow. RIP old pal. God bless Kate and all her family

So sad to hear about Tommy. Too many memories of growing up in the Beach. Last time I saw him was at the Class of 1969 Resurrection Reunion at the Gather Inn in 2019. My sincere condolences to the Gavitt family.

Tommy,
I remember driving to see you at E253 the night before the 1987 game against NYPD. It was my first game against them. You calmed me down with your demeanor and knowledge. I loved playing on the O line with you. RIP, my brother. You will be missed.

When I entered St. Francis Prep Tom was a junior
It was a tradition at the “Prep” that Freshmen had to carry
A small book called “ the crown”
Upper classmen would walk up to us and tell us show me your Crown frosh. One day it happened to me, I answered the upper classmen “ Tommy Gavitt says I don’t have to.
That ended that right there. Tommy was a big scary guy
But if you were lucky enough to truly know him he was
A real sweetheart of a man . I was honored to play football with Tom ,at times Tommy played right next to me on the “Huskys .

RIP Tom Playing with you on the o-line for the Bravest Football Club was an honor and a privilege .The only thing stronger than your physical strength was your mental toughness . You were a great teammate, firefighter , father , and husband.

My Uncle Tom was a real life super hero, I say this not because of his stature, but of his incredible work ethic, heart and soul. My condolences go out to everyone who was fortunate to have him as a part of their lives.
The father of two amazing women and the love of my Aunt Kate's life, I cant express in words the sorrow I feel. He taught me so many lessons as a youth and I always looked to mirror myself in his image. Some of the most profound memories of my life were being among him and his loving Family.
His passing is truly heartbreaking, but I can hear his voice in my head as I type this telling me not to mourn, but to stay strong.
Rest in peace Uncle Tom, you will forever be my Hero.

I don’t ’idolize’ people, but Tommy ‘taught’ me some lessons about being humble and ‘right sized’ while playing on The Huskies and on our championship softball team in The Beach.
On the football field, he made sure that his brother Freddy and ‘Minks’ welcomed me as a cocky running back when Tommy ‘let me’ through a open gap during our first ‘live’ practice. All intention, trust me! Freddy and Kevin Minks rocked my world as they both hit me at the same time. Rung my cocky ass bells!!!
Dazed and confused, I went back to the next huddle and Tommy just smiled at me. I got the picture loud and clear
After I f’d up a doubting fly ball because of my cockiness back st The Gather, Tommy literally picked me me up off the ground with one hand by my crotch, looked me in the eyes and said NEVER be selfless again, it’s a team sport. Our BeachRat community lost another LEGEND! In my prayers
