Patrick Twohig

Obituary of Patrick James Twohig

Patrick (Pat) Twohig passed away on May 24, 2024 with his children at his side. Though he resided in Lincolnshire, IL, New York was his home.

A proud first-generation Irish-American, Pat was raised a true Brooklynite in Bay Ridge where his charm earned him the nickname "Chickie". From stoop ball to egg creams, block wars to dance competitions, the stories of his youth and days at 61st street, OLPH and Ft. Hamilton High School were legendary.

Pat's life was forever changed when he met his love and partner, Breda (Bridget). Pat and Breda's meeting and courtship was one for the big screen. They first met randomly on a subway platform where Pat unsuccessfully asked Breda out. He was smitten, she, unimpressed. They crossed paths shortly thereafter when Pat went to his sister's workplace to visit and to meet the young woman she was trying to set him up with – Breda. Needless to say, she was hesitant, but Pat persisted. Fate won out at the two were married on May 16, 1964.

Pat and Breda settled in East Flatbush, Brooklyn where they built their life, raised their three children and made life-long friends in the neighborhood. He remained there until Breda's untimely death in 2009.

He spent several year in Ohio before ultimately heading to Lincolnshire, IL where he lived until his passing.

Living up to his motto, "You gotta do what you gotta do", Pat was a hard worker that selflessly held down multiple jobs for most of his life. He believed his sole purpose was to ensure that his family had the best life he could give them. He worked for many years at Bush Terminal as well as McRoberts Security. He was often spotted on long bike rides to and from work, no matter the weather, uphill both ways, sometimes with a barrel on his back.

Pat was a devout Catholic who served many years as an usher at St. Therese of Lisieux.

He was a true NYer who loved Broadway musicals, Central Park, a real slice of pizza, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Ellis Island and Rock Center at Christmas time. He loved to play tour guide when family came over from Ireland, leaving no street unseen from uptown to down.

He was a history buff who loved learning, most especially about the Civil War. He would spend hours discussing historical events with people, always trying to one-up them in trivia (most times succeeding).

Pat was passionate about baseball and a die-hard Brooklyn Dodgers fan. He described them leaving Brooklyn as one of the biggest disappointments in his life. So much so that he could not bring himself to root for their "replacement" team, the Mets. His second biggest disappointment came was when he realized that Breda had encouraged all three of his children to become Mets fan – something he never got over.

He truly enjoyed the simple things: Oreos, a rare steak, his fantasy football league, Elvis, true crime dramas, Westerns, strawberry ice cream, a good debate, Elizabeth Taylor, dancing and the Olive Garden ("what a deal!").

But if you were to know or remember one thing about him, it is that he loved and lived for his family. He dedicated his life to being a devoted husband, father, and Ye Ye – Grandad – Grand. Nothing made him happier than having his family together.

His legacy lives on through his beloved children Daniel (Jill) Twohig, Patrick (Jessica) Twohig and Mary (Frankie) Novick and his adored grandchildren Evelyn, Aine, Doran, Fionn, Bridget and Ciaran -- all of whom will miss him beyond measure.

Along with his wife, he is preceded by his parents, his sisters (Evelyn, Ida), his cherished in-laws (Molly and Dan), his best friend and brother-in-law (Johnny) and his dog (Molly)

The Visitation will be held at Marine Park Funeral Home on Monday, June 3, 2024 from 7:00 to 9:00 and Tuesday, June 4th, 2024 from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00. The funeral mass will be held at St. Therese of Lisieux on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024 at 10:30am

Pat will then return to Ireland to be laid to rest with his loving wife. A committal ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 8th at Balgriffin Cemetery, time to be determined.

Please know that Pat did not want anyone to feel compelled to wear black or suits to his services.

In lieu of flowers, Pat asked donations be made to St. Jude, his and Breda's favorite charity.
