Obituary of Elide Colella
Elide Colella, 83, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, N.Y., beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, died on June 3, 2022. Born on November 23, 1938, in Sulmona, Italy, she was the eldest child of Amalia and Panfilo Giampietro. As a young adult, she worked as a doctor’s assistant in a hospital in Italy. In 1961, she married Pietro (“Peter”) B. Colella. Mr. Colella, a veteran of World War II, worked in the garment industry in New York City, and they settled in Brooklyn, where they had two sons, Frank and Renato. While primarily a homemaker, Ms. Colella worked part-time as a seamstress and a file clerk. Throughout her adult life, she was very active with Societa Maria S.S. di Casaluce (Society of Saint Maria of Casaluce), where she was the secretary of the civic organization. Elide and Peter enjoyed attending the Societa’s many social and religious events, as well as family celebrations.
Following Mr. Colella’s death in 1995, she enjoyed socializing with friends and relatives by attending dances, taking in Broadway shows, and going on vacations and cruises. She had an impeccable sense of style, a youthful demeanor, and a zest for life, often saying, “I always feel like I’m young.” She loved to go shopping for clothes with her daughters-in-law and grandchildren, and cooking her famous lasagna and other Italian dishes for her family and friends. She had a quick smile, a ready laugh, and was generous in so many ways.
Ms. Colella was predeceased by her brother Bruno of Sulmona, Italy. She is survived by her son Frank Colella, daughter-in-law Patricia, and granddaughter Katharine Colella, all of Scarsdale, NY; her son Renato Colella, daughter-in-law RoseMarie, and grandson Peter Colella, all of Chester, NY; two sisters, Vittoria and Franca, and two brothers, Sandro and Panfilo, all of Sulmona, Italy; and several nieces and nephews who also reside in Italy. Elide will be greatly missed by her loved ones and many friends for her generosity, kindness, and warmth.
Family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, from 3-8 p.m. at Marine Park Funeral Home, 3024 Quentin Road, Brooklyn, NY. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at 9:45 a.m. at Good Shepherd Church, 1950 Batchelder Street, Brooklyn, NY, with a burial to follow at Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Boulevard Calverton, NY 11933.
