My grandfather, Mr. Horace I. Gordon, was a dignified man, an exemplary man. He was the embodiment of everything a great man should be. He exuded this manly quiet confidence completely unpretentious, yet all consuming. When he spoke you felt his strength of character & Intelligence all wrapped up in this loving warmth that made you feel secure, confident & courageous through his compassionate guidance. He was a loyal and devoted husband, father & grandfather, brother, uncle and companion. He extended his generosity, understanding and loving care to all he knew and everyone that he came into contact with, so that neighbors and friends all became like family through his love. He wasn’t usually a man of many words, though when he did share his words were always insightful, witty and full of wisdom mixed in with a bit of comic relief. He could pull you out of any dark place and illuminate your world with ease.
I have many fond memories of my grandfather. We would spend endless hours chatting every week for years in between visits. When his health no longer permitted him to drive 1 hour all the way to my home just to bring my sons their favorite muffins our phone calls became that more meaningful and special. When there was no one else who would be or could be there .. you could always depend and rely upon my grandfather’s strength, compassion and humility to be there to support you to the very end. He was a man who wore many hats and could be whatever the situation called for to make you feel comforted, important and loved. My grandfather was my hero, my closest confidant and one of my best friends. He was everything you could hope and wish for in a father, let alone a grandfather and in a friend; always honest, always sincere and always there.
My grandfather will be remembered for his dignity and integrity, his generosity, empathy, strength and good natured humor. He will be remembered as the backbone of the Gordon family structure as the 1 man army that could be all things to all people and could carry it and do it all with grace. There is not another that could fill his shoes better. I, Christina Gordon, will cherish the memory of my grandfather Mr. Horace. I. Gordon and forever be filled with all the love and care given to my children and I throughout the years. May he rest in eternal peace. I love you grandpa.
Love you forever and a day.

Daddy, I recall the time when I felt like giving up at college. That weekend I came home and you left me a poem that I framed and cherish to this day as to why never to give up on anything no matter how bad it seems.
