What a shock to hear about Gary's sudden passing. We have been Marine Park handball friends for more than 40 years! To have friends in our lives for that long is a blessing and shows the character of a person. Never a bad word was uttered about Gary nor by Gary. He was a decent, kind, fun, funny, generous, easy going, and beloved friend. And, oh, how he loved his girls! He would light up every time I asked for them gushing with pride and regaling me with their great successes. How lucky to have a devoted Dad like Gary! I will miss seeing him all year round on the courts and I feel blessed to have known him and to have called each other 'my friend'.
Rest in peace sweet Gary 'Batman' Beckman! xxxxxxxooooooo

Farewell Dear Friend
In 40 years in the business I’ve seen many come and go
Thinking how could I do without this person that I know
Eventually time moves on and you adapt accordingly
Learning to manage without the support given willingly
And then someone like Gary arrives with a smile on his face
And you know in an instant it’s one you can’t replace
Perhaps it was the things he said to ease ones pain or fear
Perhaps it was the way he listened when others would not hear
Maybe it was the willingness to always lend a hand
Making sense of things that were difficult to understand
No matter how busy Gary was or what was going on
He’d find time he did not have to help you carry on
Gary had that special magic that made us smile and laugh
His presence could be felt throughout the entire Brooklyn Staff
There was this and so much more - More than he will ever know
And that is why his colleagues will always love him so
And now we say farewell to man as solid as granite
He will be sorely missed - A finer man never walked the planet
Tomorrow is promised to no one and life nowadays can be scary
But our lives are enriched because we knew a Beckman named Gary.
R.I.P.

Gary will be missed as a colleague and a friend. He worked well with others and his work output was meticulous. He had a playful streak but it never took away from his overall goodness. We worked together of over a decade and his passing seems surreal. May his soul rest in peace!

I have known Gary since we were teenagers. He never changed. I would run into Gary quite often over the years. It was always a pleasure to see him . He had a quick smile and easy way about him that always made you feel welcome and comfortable. He looked so great and healthy the last time I saw him that it seems unreal he’s gone. But he’s gone to a better place where I hope to see him again. Say hi to all our other friends who have gone before! I imagine Heaven to be a lot like the park we all loved so much. May God Bless you, your girls, brothers and family. Rest In Peace Gary

It was an honor and privilege to have known Gary since we were in HS together. Time and miles may have distanced us, but I have many fond memories of all the great times we had together. RIP dear friend.

It was my pleasure to call Gary my friend for at least the last 40 years. He was quick with a quip or a joke and I shared many laughs with him over the years through innumerable handball games at Marine Park and gatherings elsewhere. If you needed a hand Gary was willing to help, a mark of a true friend.
He had some tough times in his life, but he always managed to pull himself through them and come out the other side better & wiser than he was before. That only increased my respect for him.
Most of all I'll always remember how devoted he was to his girls Laura & Steffie. He was a single dad who did everything he could to help his girls advance in life and to have values & morals that would serve them well throughout their life.
His life was all too short but it was well-lived and loaded with love. He was a good man.
With love,
Phil Quirk

Tommu and family. Shocked to receive such sad news from Barbara. I know how close the two of you always were. I'm so sorry for this huge loss to your entire family. My thoughts are with all of you. Chrissy
