Rita Scanlon

Obituary of Rita Scanlon

Rita Dolores Scanlon, 90, a lifelong resident of Brooklyn, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Brooklyn. The 8th of ten children, FAMILY was everything to Rita.  She moved from Ford Street to Knapp Street during her formative years with immediate family, to settling in a home with her husband, Robert, on East 34th Street for over 45 years before their final move to an apartment back on Knapp Street in 2012.

As a young woman, Rita was proud to work for the Chiclets factory and often talked about those years with great fondness.  Robert and Rita married at Resurrection Church on February 26, 1966 and lived happily together for more than 48 years before Bob’s passing in November 2014.  She was a communicant and club member of Good Shepherd Church for many years.  After being a caregiver to her ill mother for several years, Rita started a new job in 1988 with the Food Services Department of the New York Board of Education.  While she never had her own children, Rita greatly enjoyed her lunchtime contact and assistance to these young students.  She worked for over 11 years, retiring in 1999 just before turning 70 years old.  She and Bob traveled a bit, enjoyed senior citizen club activities, visited with and shared her home with family, and again became a long-time caregiver to her dear sister, Antoinette, and subsequently, Bob, before their passing.

Rita was predeceased by her parents, Salvatore and Josephine Basile;  nine siblings and their spouses including Andrew and Lucille Basile, Rose and Joseph Lucido, Antoinette and Paul Orlando, Viola Torbett, Mary and John Maestri, Vincent and Dolores Basile, Mildred and Guy Nestor, Frank and Rose Basile, John and Claire Basile; and her loving husband, Robert. Rita was a caring and generous Aunt to quite a number of nieces and nephews, Godmother to a few, and maintained very close and loving relationships with several of them over the years.

Rest in peace Rita Scanlon - daughter, sister, wife, aunt, caregiver.
