Obituary of Matthew K. Fitzgerald

Matthew K. Fitzgerald passed away surrounded by his loving family on March 16, 2017 at the age of 91. Matt was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Peter and Helen (nee Carey) Fitzgerald. He is survived by his loving wife Ann (nee McCourt) Fitzgerald. The couple celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary just this past February. Matt and Ann enjoyed life together residing in Forest Hills for 60 years and spending their summers in Breezy Point, eventually moving to Breezy Point for the last years of Matt's life. Matt is a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. Following the war, Matt began his own successful freight forwarding business, which he continued until his retirement. Throughout his life, Matt was always a very active person. He was an All-City Center Fielder for the Bishop Loughlin baseball team, and is a member of the Bishop Loughlin Sports Hall of Fame. Continuing his love for baseball, Matt rode his bicycle every Sunday to watch his son and nephew play softball in the local walk league. Matt is the beloved father of Sue (Mark) Bresnahan, Cookie (Eddie) Walsh, Marcie (Mike) McHale, Matt (Karen) Fitzgerald, and Peter (Alicia) Fitzgerald. Matt was the dear brother of Jane Kelly, and the late Artie Fitzgerald, Father Pete Fitzgerald, Eileen Ireland, and Joe Fitzgerald. He is the cherished Pop of Brian, Liz, Matt, Michael, Brendan, Chris, Annmarie, Tim, John, Jen, Katy, Luke, Emily, Maggie, Taylor, Logan, Matt, and Jill. The visitation for Matt Fitzgerald will be held at Marine Park Funeral Home on Sunday March 19, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and again on Monday March 20, 2017 from 2:00 – 4:00 & 7:00 – 9:00 PM. The funeral will be held on Tuesday March 21, 2017 – the family will be meeting at the funeral home by 9:30 AM. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church at 11:00 AM. Immediately following the Funeral Mass, a Committal Service will take place at St. John Cemetery.
