Writing eulogies for loved ones is just as difficult as giving them, simply because, there is that responsibility to come up with one that will truly honor their memory, and at the same time having to deal with being privy to those other than family, when the inevitability of losing oneself to intense emotions come into play.
I know for a fact that it is bound to happen in kuya Rudy's case, not only because we were so used to him being around, and in the process may have unknowingly taken him for granted in the midst of a hurried and self absorbed life we all live, but also because we were not prepared for such sudden eventuality.
When I think of kuya Rudy, I think about a life that was wrought with self sacrifice, selfless giving, loyalty to a fault, love of family, and one of overflowing talents that sadly did not get the chance to see their full potential. Nevertheless, he did not mind living a simple life with simple needs because that is how he was! Never wanting to be the center of attention to the point of rejecting or walking away from whenever it came knocking at his door.
More distant memories of him came flooding back of late, perhaps out of desperate need to hang on to this man who had once upon a time parented us to the best of his ability and the way he knew how, and whose symbolic presence is slowly fading away before our very eyes.
Did you know that he can really and truly sing? I remember him joining an amateur singing contest back home when i was a young girl. I was just as excited as nanay, and did not mind craning my neck while standing on my toes in order to get my ear close to the transistor radio. He sang Mat Monro's "Ebb Tide" and remember being real proud of him! That started his long running love affair with singing from the Minus One era to today's Karaoke. Yesterday, as I was going through the fb family albums, I saw less of him and much more of us. I realized now that we had missed him while he was holed up in his room doing a one-man karaoke concert! Fast forward to the present, after an earlier conference with the palliative care doctor, Emmie and I decided to play all the Mat Monro songs close to his ear....a deja vu to that remote part of my memory as a young girl rooting for her hero.
Did you know that we almost had a male nurse in the family? Kuya Rudy went to nursing school at Luzonian university in Lucena. It was around that time when H fever epidemic hit our town. Our younger brother Rolando was not spared. Kuya Rudy took charge and stayed with him up to the very end. I thought to myself he was going to make a good nurse for sure! But it was not meant to be. His hair started falling for some unknown reason and became very self conscious about it. He quit school temporarily. During the lull, the owner of Verastigue tailoring near us offered to train him, and his future career went the opposite direction. He was a good tailor and very passionate about his work. People came to him by word of mouth, and was even sought by balikbayan friends of friends!
Did you know that before there were cousins Boi, Obet, and Angelo; myself; niece Johanna; nephews John, VJ, and Lanz as well as great niece Bella, kuya Rudy was the first person in the family that I can recall who had such artistic inclination? He would make sketches of famous rock singers he saw from the pages of a jingle magazine. I would gather them together and hang them on the wall facing his cutting table. His artistic expression did not end there. He also delved into toy making around the time he was on hiatus from school. Sometimes, I wonder as to how far it would have taken him had he pursued the arts....a starving artist perhaps yet half fulfilled and not a thought of giving up on a dream. Just a few days ago, my nephew John showed me a pic of two sketches that he did. He found them at the bulletin board of Sea Gate Rehab and Nursing facility. Not bad, not bad at all for someone who has not done it in ages, and whose hand was no longer as steady as it used to!
Did you know that he could write? I have known it for myself as early as I was in HS when I came upon a workbook of his. Saw words that were quite foreign to me, and remember taking note of them with a good deal of help from MW dictionary. Amazing how far we've come in this day and age when we have google and wikipedia at our convenient disposal. Writing became a passion on my end and an unexpected ticket to popularity in school, using the same words I saw in his workbook at first and later from other media sources. But in my heart of heart, he was still the master! And he easily proved that when he became my life saver as we tried to beat the deadline on our college yearbook. He did two captions in verses for me at the time when it felt like my brain was already fried! And yes, he didn't fail to deliver!
Did you know that he made it possible for us to take care of our ailing mother and father at home and close to family in our absence? I guess his background in nursing from years back though somewhat outdated, helped him a great deal in handling the chronic and complicated aspect of their care. And like always, he took on the challenge without complaint. His contribution did not stop there. His creativity and resourcefulness caught up on us, as we followed his lead in doing whatever process he'd come up with in order to help facilitate their care. Such ingenuity would leave me in awe at times!
But his enthusiasm gradually waned after our parents passed on. On hind sight, we could have or would have foreseen that the little mundane things he did for us, Emmie's family especially, was his way of trying to validate that he still mattered. In the long run, the ability to problem solve started to deteriorate that no amount of reassurance could put his weary heart and mind at ease. Whatever happened to that "beautiful mind" I have long admired? With it, his body started to weaken. Could he or were we unbeknownst participants of a Divine plan as to which direction the remaining years of his life should go and end? Such is the mystery that only He can answer and we ought to trust....
Looking back, his life has been riddled with what ifs. Yet he didn't think twice in choosing his family and continued to look after us up to the very end, when we were faced with the most difficult decision we had to make. And so we will forever be grateful to him for that! Still, we can't help but feel that he has been short changed in this life. So to sum it all up and borrowing the lines from the song Vincent by Don McClean.....'This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you"
Rest in peace kuya Rudy.....you will be dearly missed!
