Obituary of Nancy A. Sheldon

Nancy Sheldon passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 12, 2015, at the age of 51. Nancy was born to parents, Donald and Anna May, on May 20, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up the seventh of eleven children, having lived her life in East Flatbush and Marine Park. Growing up on Avenue D, across the street from Saint Therese of Lisieux Roman Catholic Church, was an instrumental part of her childhood. She developed her love of basketball on the playgrounds of Little Flower, attended P.S. 208, and later went onto James Madison High School, where she contributed to a number of championship seasons. She simply loved the sport like no other and was often found on a basketball court; morning, noon, and evening. She was a local basketball legend; known for her ability to run “point”, control the ball, and to shoot with the best of them. On the court, it was not uncommon to see her “running with the boys”, nor was it uncommon to see a few jaws on the floor as she moved down the court and took aim. Like many girls, she was always on the hunt for the next best pair of shoes, but in Nancy’s case, it was typically the next edition of Air Jordan’s Basketball Shoes. Nancy worked at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Home Box Office (HBO). Nancy was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a young adult but worked for many years as she struggled to maintain her health. Given her love of children, she contributed to a number of fund raising events for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation over the years. Nancy’s employment at HBO was an important part of her life as she became friends with many colleagues over the years and furthered her passion for movies and television. While she enjoyed watching horror movies, it was clear that she only watched them to see the reaction of her family and friends who were often traumatized by it, somehow turning a horror into a comedy. Nancy was an avid photographer, whose favorite subjects were children and still life. In addition, Nancy was an early adopter to the latest and greatest technologies. Once the iPod was developed, she simply traded in her portable CD player, and never looked back. It was commonplace to see Nancy demonstrating the latest gadgets to her nieces and nephews, which increased her “cool” factor with the younger set. Recently, Nancy discovered the “selfie-stick” and was out and about trying to gather family and friends into the shot. Nancy loved gatherings for the photo opportunities they presented and would often walk away with more than 100 photos from an event. Nancy is survived by her father, Donald; brother, Donald Jr (Linda (sister-in law), Eva (niece), Terrence (nephew); sister, Patricia Nuber (Greg (brother-in-law), Greg Jr. (nephew), Alison (niece); brother, James; sister, Kathleen Ball (Donald (brother-in-law), Donald III (nephew), Chris (nephew), Lauren (niece); sister, Maureen Fox (Alan (brother-in-law), Ashley (niece), Steven (nephew), Kristen (niece), sister, Mary Jane Barone (Dominick (brother-in-law), Colleen (niece), Sabrina (niece); brother, Michael (Anne (sister-in-law), Matthew (nephew), Samantha (niece); brother, Timothy (Eleni (sister-in-law), Phoebe (niece), Connor (nephew); brother, Christopher (Lisa (sister-in-law), Christopher George (nephew), Victoria (niece); and sister, Jennifer Weid (Tom (brother-in-law), Julianne (niece), Kate (niece). Nancy is preceded in death by her mother, Anna May (1934-2000). Nancy will be remembered for her love of family, but most especially for the bonds she developed with her 20 nieces and nephews. A viewing of the body will be available to the public at the Marine Park Funeral Home, located at 3024 Quentin Road, Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 between the hours of 2pm and 5pm and again between 7pm and 9pm.
