I was shocked today to see notice of Jim passing in uw whitewater alumni obits. I have never read it before but for some reason I did today. It's been 43 years since he moved to the big city from whitewater. Jim was a great guy. Kind generous unassuming funny and smart. I have way to many stories of crazy visit s to the city. Just wish the last one was not so long ago. Our best to you Nanci and family.

A Thought for Jim from California
Outside, a warm April night we prayed you would recover.
Cop O' Golds in full bloom, their fragrance promising.
But no.
How cruel to learn you passed on.
Across the river riding point.
We remember your smile waving goodbye at JFK.
Thank you lucky frog and your bride.
You gave us a respite in N.Y.C.
And you saved Bernie's Shop
You survived Sandy.
Now New York seems too far away
And empty without your "Hi".

I only met Jim twice in my life. Both times he was so kind, funny and honest of a person, he was hard to forget. The first was at a small dinner party thrown by a mutual friend. I remember upon learning Jim owned Metro Bikes, I shared a pie in the sky idea of mine to create a community bike repair business, where people could get their bikes worked on for free. I remember Jim non-mockingly just looked at me with that funny grin and pointedly asking me, "and just who are you going to get to do the work, monkeys?". Ha Ha. I remember that response to today.
The other time I was stranded in NYC after a photo assignment del through. Jim and Nanci took me in and treated me like one of their family. Fed me, took me to breakfast and let me crash on the couch. Even gave me a bike to ride to Central Park.
Jim and Nanci are some of the nicest people I've ever known and I'm proud to say I know them.
I hope Jim's somewhere reading this.

I have known Jim since the early 80's from the great times in Lee, Mass. We've stayed close ever since then. Jim was the best from start to finish. He was always a motivated sports competitor, always quick to point out that he won for his age group. He also hosted me at turkey shoots and The Men's Club in Lee.
Will always remember having too many beers, cigars at a mafia-owned restaurant during the Feast of San Gennaro, NYC. He made it possible for me and Sheila to have many visits to NYC and Breezy by providing accommodations. We shared many laughs with this solid, gentle, generous, sweet, modest man. He was extremely hard working and truly had a passion for the shops. He always made time to see us while we were there. Sheila just visited in late October, and his smile was as big as ever.
He was the proud father of Pearl the cat, Nanci's Buck, Buddy, Inky, and now Casey and Joey.
Talked to him 2 wks. prior to stroke. He sounded happier than I had ever heard him. Love to Nanci

As we spoke to each other on Roosevelt Walk, concerned about our neighbor Jim, each conversation began or ended the same, "He's such a nice guy." was the thought we all shared.
Jim helped all his neighbors. He shoveled snow, swept, kept a garden and beautified both entrances to the walk. (I think most of us own bikes from his shop.)
Jim never passed without a smile and a big hello. If I was tinkering with our bikes and Jim walked passed, he would re-appear in 30 seconds with all the proper bike tools and get the job done.
Jim tuned up all our bikes after Sandy and wouldn't accept payment. "This is what I can do he said."
Jim will be missed by all "...such a nice guy."
Nanci we are here for you.

We are extremely saddened by the loss of our dear and friendly neighbor Jim Denison. He was a quiet man who enjoyed life. Living at Breezy with Nanci, he always had that smile.
Did everyone know what a great "digger" he was. Always planting a tree or bush moving it from one place to a better place, and of course planting flowers. Nanci has all the names for the plantings but we could never keep up with them. Whether it was in their garden and often ours, either on the deck or around the fence he kept it all going. He was also the best "sweeper" and "shoveler" we ever knew. No sand or snow was safe with Jim around.

He was our forever go-to guy when we needed a donation especially to the Nassau County Autism Children's Fund. My sister has three children with special needs and Jim never hesitated to donate. And his bikes became the most popular item at the auction. He contributed annually to the Heart Association. But he was most proud of being an active member of the VFW and could be seen every Memorial Day selling "poppies" at the Breezy Gate.
But our best recollection of Jim will always be his deliveries on Christmas morning. Just rolling in that extra gift and making Santa and Mrs, Claus look so good.
Thank you Jim, and God Bless

Jim was our good friend a quiet man willing to help out at anything. He was our guardian angel this winter with all the snow. He will be greatly missed. There wasn't a day that went by that he didn't stop in to see how Paul was doing. He always stopped in either coming or going to the beach to say hello. Paul will truly miss him they would go for walks went kayaking together took car rides and puttered around their house together Jim was also the one who donated the flag pole on Roosevelt corner.
We have many fond memories of Nanci and Jim at the holidays Jim loved to eat and had a real sweet tooth. Till we meet again dear friend......

Dear Nanci , Casey ,Joey and Family,
Jim was a great neighbor and friend, this awful winter whenever it snowed, I would see Jim out before 6 am, shoveling a path in front of everyone's house, as bitter cold as it was he never missed a snow storm, he also kept our bikes safe in his basement and fixed them after Sandy, he had a green thumb, and always a smile. He will be missed by all of us on Roosevelt. With heartfelt sympathy.

Jim and my dad were close friends for as long as I can remember, so naturally, many of my childhood memories involve him. I spent a great deal of time at Jim's house in Lee...learning how to swim there, fishing in his pond. We went with Jim to the Macy's Day Parade, the circus...on and on. When my wife and I got married in Virginia, Jim flew down for the day to be a part of our celebration, and it meant so much to us and to my father for him to do that. He was always so much fun to be around, and we will definitely miss him.

I went to grade school and high school with Jim although I never played an instrument or football, which were two of his interests. We did spend time together particularly in the cub scouts and boy scouts, Troop 11. Jim was an eagle scout. I haven't had much contact with Jim over the last 50 years and find we now shared a common interest in bicycles. This weekend I will carry him i my heart as I climb Black Mountain on my bicycle.

Around the corner, I had a friend: sincere sympathy, Nanci. Jim was such an honest, pleasant, always-smiling, hard-working, caring man. He took as much pride and enjoyment from his bike business as did his overly satisfied clients -- my many family members can certainly attest to that......he always went way above and far beyond through the years. Jim was a proud veteran who shined. Thank you, Nanci, for sharing these difficult weeks with us .... you were not alone. Jim Dennison Rocked! Gentle Hugs --- Cathy Hickey

Jim was my best buddy in high school. He played trumpet (I played sax)with me in the concert band, the jazz band, and the pep bands. We were about the only guys in school who were into jazz while everyone else was rock-'n-rolling. We played side-by-side in the offensive line of the football team...all 150 pounds of us. He was best man at my wedding.
I'll never forget Jimbo.

Dear Nanci,
Jim was one of the most respected members of our Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He served as our Adjutant for the past several years & he was instrumental in every activity and function we conducted. Weather it was selling poppies, driving our more senior members to meetings or simply cleaning the Fire House after the Memorial Day ceremony, Jim was always there helping. His kindness & consideration for others impressed everyone he came in contact with. More than losing a valued member, we all suffer the loss of a good friend and a true gentleman.
Our deepest condolences to you ,his brother, sisters & his entire family.

He was always smiling and always ready to lend a hand to those that needed help. Jim was a kind person and an all around great guy. We have so many fond memories of him while we were next door neighbors in Breezy Point. He was such a great friend to our mom and dad (Anna and Dominick) while they were on this earth with us. Dad was so happy when Jim would come over so they could sit and talk. He was a true friend and he will be missed by all who have had the opportunity to know him.

My heart goes out to you all, and I share your sorrow at the loss of our beloved Jim. So many of my Breezy memories are infused with his presence.
