Obituary of Richard M. Schmidt
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Richard Schmidt of Brooklyn, New York, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Richie was the son of the late Joan and Harold Schmidt.
Richie was predeceased by his oldest siblings, Michael and John JJ, and is survived by his three loving sisters, Susan, Deborah, and Elizabeth. He also leaves behind his cherished children, Jessica (Kellie), Nicholas, Alana, Selena, Derek, and Anna.
Richie led a full and active life, beginning in East Flatbush on a block he considered the best any child could ask for. He spent his childhood playing outside until the streetlights came on, and he often reminisced about the lifelong friendships he formed there. Later, as a teenager, he moved to Mill Basin, where he and his sisters made many more wonderful memories at L-Park.
A roofer by trade like his father before him, Richie took great pride in his work. He truly loved being outdoors in the sunshine. He was also a gifted conversationalist—warm, selfless, witty, and charming. Anyone who shared a cup of coffee with him was sure to hear a great story.
Richie eventually married Marlene and had two children with her; Jessica and Nicholas. He had a beautiful daughter, Alana, with Pepper and a handsome son, Derek, with his second wife Michele. Richie also embraced Michele's daughter, Selena, and Marlene's daughter Anna as his own. Richie had two wonderful grandchildren, too. A gift that all parents hope for. He was blessed to have Zeyden and Leyla in his life. He was immensely proud of all of his children and grandchildren. He doted on them with the greatest love a father could give.
Known for his love of fast cars and rock and roll, he was undoubtedly one of the coolest people to grace the streets of Brooklyn.
Richie will be missed immensely by his family and friends. We find solace in knowing that he is now reunited with his parents and in the arms of his loving mother.
