Obituary of Jean G. Torrente
Jean Torrente (born Giovanina Virgona), 101, passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 2026, surrounded by love and comfort.
Born in Ditmas Park, Jean grew up in a close-knit family, often traveling back and forth between home and her family’s fruit and vegetable store on Church Avenue. Those early years shaped the rhythm of a life defined by hard work, generosity, and care for others. A gifted violinist in her youth, Jean ultimately chose to devote her life to what mattered most to her—her family—becoming the steady, loving heart of her home.
Jean lived nearly her entire life in Sheepshead Bay, where her home became a gathering place for everyone she loved—and many she had just met. She was the kindest, most welcoming person, known for inviting anyone who walked through her door to sit down for a cup of coffee, whether they were family, a neighbor, the butcher, or a repairman. Her house was the central hub for endless holidays, celebrations, and everyday moments that became cherished memories.
Jean was the beloved wife of Frank Torrente, with whom she shared 39 years of marriage, and together they built a home rooted in love, faith, and family. She was a devoted mother to her three children, John, Josephine, and Paula, and lovingly welcomed her daughter-in-law, Connie, and son-in-law, Harvey, as her own. Family to Jean was never limited by circumstance; she embraced all who became part of her children’s lives, including Harvey’s four children, welcoming them fully and without hesitation. She was a proud grandmother to Jean Marie & Charles, Christopher & Jill, Andrea & Jeremy, Daniel & Gabrielle and Jamie & Michael. Across generations, she was a constant presence in her family’s lives, caring for her great-grandchildren Christian, Julianna, Luca, Jack, Abbie, Madison, Gabriel, Ben, Lilly, Paige and Casey after school and during busy days, always ready with an open door, a warm bowl of noodle soup, and the steady comfort only she could provide. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her sister Catherine and her son John.
Her Catholic faith was deeply important to her and guided her daily life. She attended Good Shepherd Church, where her faith was a source of strength, gratitude, and compassion for others.
Jean’s legacy is simple and profound: everyone is welcome, kindness matters, and there is always room at the table.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jean’s memory to MJS Hospice, whose compassionate care in her final days allowed her to retain dignity and comfort, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, by clicking the links provided,
