James Ryan

Obituary of James J. Ryan

James “Jimmy” Ryan, 71, passed away on December 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jimmy was the beloved son of the late James J. Ryan, Sr. and Kathleen Ryan. From an early age, Jimmy was known for his strong work ethic and sense of responsibility, beginning his working life at just 14 years old—qualities that remained with him throughout his life.

At the age of 16, Jimmy met the love of his life, Barbara. Their connection grew naturally through family friendships—Jimmy was close with Barbara’s brother, and Barbara with Jimmy’s sister. Their bond endured for decades, and they were happily married for 49 years, building a life rooted in love, loyalty, and devotion.

Jimmy dedicated more than 40 years of service to the Bank of New York, where he built a respected career and ultimately retired as a Vice President. His coworkers consistently described him as a pleasure to work with—kind, dependable, generous, and loyal. He was simply an all-around great guy.

Jimmy had a deep compassion for animals, especially strays, who seemed to instinctively know he was a safe haven. Many of his beloved dogs found their way to him when they needed him most. His newest companion, Buddy, came into his life on Thanksgiving Day after Jimmy found him outside a bakery. Buddy joined Jimmy’s cherished cat, Maggie May, who was always close by his side.

Jimmy’s love language was action. He showed his care through everyday help, constant support, and quiet acts of service. He was always there for his family in any way he could be. His siblings regarded him not only as a brother but as another father figure, a steady presence whose guidance and love shaped their lives. His family will never be the same without him.

Jimmy will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Barbara. He is the cherished brother of Donna (Bill) Raiola, Lenore (Marian) Ryan, and Kevin (Zuria) Ryan. He is the dear uncle of Kara, John (Jessy), Ryan, Caillin (Courtney), and Liam - and beloved great uncle of Josie, Jack, and Archer.

Jimmy’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
