Josephine Cooney

Obituary of Josephine Marie Cooney

Josephine M. Cooney of Marine Park (Brooklyn), NY, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Josephine was born on July 5, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY and lived there all her life. She is the daughter of the late Joseph and the late Josephine (née Curran) Sloan.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert (Bob) J. Cooney, whom she loved all her life. Josephine and Bob grew up in the same parish in Brooklyn, graduating from St. Teresa of Avila elementary school together. They dated for many years before sharing a 52-year marriage. Josephine is the cherished mother of Robert Cooney and Eileen Cooney Oroszlany (Tony), and devoted grandmother of James.

Josephine was predeceased by her three beloved brothers, Michael, Patrick, and John Sloan. She loved her brothers as much as any sister could, and was heartbroken to lose all three of them in the past four years. Josephine is survived by her many loving in-laws and nieces and nephews.

After being a shoe model, and then a bookkeeper, she raised her two children until they were both in high school, upon which she began working as the secretary of St. Edmund elementary school in Brooklyn, NY, until she retired.

May she rest forever in our Lord's loving embrace.
