Obituary of Margaret McEneaney
Margaret Mary McEneaney (nee McCahill)- Age 91 - Born in Ireland on June 7, 1933, Margaret is predeceased by her husband Hugh. Mother of James, (Susan), Margaret Fusco (Joseph), Anne, Patricia Fitzgerald (Gene), Brian (Carol), Kevin, Claire Prezioso (George), Geraldine Spellman, and Phillip (Stephanie); Grandmother of twenty; and Great Grandmother to Nolan and Mariella.
As a teenager, Margaret emigrated from Drumury, Ballinagh, Cavan, Ireland, to Queens, New York where she would go on to complete her studies at Bryant High School with distinction, having been inducted into ARISTA (National Honor Society). Soon after graduating, she took a position with Trans World Airlines, but the glamorous life of air travel at the time was no match for the love and affection she received from Hugh McEneaney. The two were married in 1957 and made Brooklyn their home where she devoted the next three decades to her husband and their nine children. She sowed a profound faith in God and her proud Irish heritage deep within the hearts of her family and tended to them lovingly until it took root. All the while she somehow found time to volunteer in her parish as lector, serve as PTA president, care for any animal in need, and ensure several hundred houseplants including a few orange trees thrived.
As her children grew older, Margaret began a third career with the NYC Board of Education in 1987. Starting as a paraprofessional at William E. Grady High School’s guidance department, her maternal nature complimented the supportive work carried out by that office. Encouraged by her peers, she pursued every opportunity her new role provided eventually attaining school secretary title and a college degree in 1991.
After Hugh’s passing in 1999, Margaret again channeled her energy toward positive community activities through her membership in organizations such as the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Columbiettes (Knights of Columbus), and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. World travel, the theatre, and new friends and experiences rounded out a well-deserved retirement. Perhaps most famous was her Irish soda bread, a delicacy highly sought after by friends, family, and fundraising organizers alike.
To know Margaret was to truly understand what it means to sacrifice and achieve, to laugh and to love, to dance and sing with all your heart, and to know she is smiling down on all of us right now in the presence of God and her beloved Hugh.
